Take Root Therapy May Newsletter

We learn to be curious about our anger, revamp Pershing Square, and get ready for Love Island.

A Letter From Our Founder

Dear reader,

May has been a lot. I don’t mean that dramatically, I mean it in the way that parents of school-age children will probably recognize immediately. The end of the year requests, the performances, the parties, the feelings. All of it landing all at once, and all of it needing something from me.

When I am stretched this thin, I know things about myself. I know that my patience has less room in it. I know that I am quicker to irritability and quicker to snap. I have learned to recognize this in myself not as a character flaw but as information: my body telling me that I am running low and need tending to.

This month I have been trying to protect my rest and carve out small moments that are just for me. Watercolor painting. Reading. I just finished Lily and the Octopus, which gutted me completely and also cracked something open, access to grief that I have been carrying for years. That kind of catharsis is its own form of rest.

And then my family and I went to breakfast for our anniversary. We go every year to the place where my partner and I got married, and it is one of my favorite rituals. This time, we were seated next to a large party who were loud and unhappy. Normally I could let something like that go. This time I couldn’t. My attention locked on them, and I felt the irritation rising in a way that felt bigger than the situation deserved.

I knew what that meant. I’ve learned to recognize it. I stepped away and ultimately had to wrap up breakfast early while doing my best to be easy with myself.

This month’s article is about anger… the everyday kind that most of us were never taught to understand. What it actually is, what it is trying to tell us, and how we begin to listen to it without letting it take over.

I hope it meets you wherever you are this month. And if you are tired, I hope you find a moment soon that is just for you.

As always, if you’re looking for support, we’re here. You can reach us at info@takeroottherapy.com or call or text (323) 388-5578.

Warmly,
Saba Harouni Lurie (she/her/hers)

What Is Your Anger Really Trying to Tell You?: Understanding Anger, What Lies Beneath It, and How to Begin Listening

Growing up in my Iranian household, anger scared the shit out of me. My parents, who both worked all the time and were generally overwhelmed themselves, weren’t necessarily quick to anger, but when they felt angry, they would explode. It wasn’t uncommon, and it never felt okay…
